Kummer & Herrman

we are a small creative team

Kummer & Herrman was founded in 1998 by Jeroen Kummer and Arthur Herrman. Together, we represent almost half a century of experience in design and communication. We are curious, open and engaged, and passionate about our work and our clients’ stories.

Our team is compact and flexible. It consists of creative professionals who share our love of innovative, eye-catching projects. When needed, we strengthen our in-house expertise with partners in a wide range of media, design and production disciplines. Our small size means that Arthur and Jeroen can maintain strong involvement in all projects without unnecessary back office.

With a strong presence in the cultural field and an acclaimed expertise in photography and documentary projects, we serve a growing number of (inter)national clients. We also have extensive experience of working with organisations in both the public and private sector. While their story may differ, what they share is an open mind and a desire to communicate a message as clearly as possible.

we design stories

We have strong editorial involvement in our projects. We design stories as we say. A story may be specific or temporary, such as an exhibition or campaign, or intended for a longer term or broader application, such as a visual identity. We continuously strive to expand our horizons and skills and are always open to exploring new areas.

More than a design agency, we are thinkers and creators. We believe that design should do much more than just look good. It should not overpower but enhance the story being told; it should inject it with exactly the right amount of energy to excite, surprise or simply convey a message to the intended audience clearly and concisely.

With a rich background in print, we have grown into a truly multi-disciplinary agency with broad expertise in both spatial and interactive design. We are happy to design a book or exhibition, but we can also offer advice on which media would best suit a specific story.

In addition to our design practice, we regularly share our thoughts and ideas about design in lectures and workshops and are we involved in education. We also sit on the supervisory board of the Association of Dutch Designers (BNO).

we listen and create

Storytelling starts with listening. And asking questions. Dialogue with the client is essential to the creative process and the outcome. Sometimes this dialogue consists of a one-on-one conversation, sometimes we organise a group brainstorm to uncover the true aim of a project. It is all part of getting under the skin of a story. We then visualise our ideas, present and discuss them.

Good design is the result of a strong, clear idea, which is first identified and then consistently applied and implemented. A good idea should be simple, surprising and relevant. At the same time, we like to take an editorial position to ensure the relevance and completeness of a story.

We recognise the importance of both creativity and execution. We believe that a design can only be successful if it is worked out to the smallest detail. That's why we stay in close contact with all parties involved in a production. We remain critical of ourselves, our suppliers and clients throughout the process.
